Ontario shares details on plan to remove 8% tax on new purpose-built rental housing

In November 2023, Ontario announced details of its plan to remove 8% in provincial Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on new purpose-built rentals. This tax cut, combined with the federal government's proposed GST waiver, would bring the total tax cut for all new long-term rentals in Ontario up to 13%. This change is retroactive to September 14, and will apply to new residential units in buildings with at least four private apartment units or 10 private rooms or suites, that are designated for long-term rental.
